Siren Music Festival 2010 - Matt & Kim
Monday, July 19, 2010 at 12:20AM The annual diesel ass journey to Coney Island began, inevitably, somewhat late Saturday after a long night peeping our boys Hollis Brown on a sailing vessel called the Half Moon. It's not often you get to see good live music on a booze cruise around Manhattan, and we were glad to be in attendance on this (thankfully) calm night of gentle seas.
The next day we set a course bearing sou'-sou'-east, a voyage taking well over an hour from Manhattan. Luckily for us the D train was running express, with plenty of seats to spread out and gather the necessary rest which had eluded us the night before. Good thing too, since as you'll see, all available energy was required to tough through the mayhem at the front of the stage. Hot dogs, laughably large beer cups, exposure to UV index 10, and other unhealthy activities were enjoyed prior to throwing mad bows and copping the below footage of Matt and Kim, who headlined this year's festival.
The decision to go gonzo with our coverage this year was not without it's problems. Barely half way through the crowd, we were accosted by an older fellow who looked a bit out of place among the sea of Wayfarer sporting hipsters, who wanted us to move so badly that things got physical. The Big Ass Lens crew had to regulate and fisticuffs nearly erupted, but camera and crew came out unscathed as we threw more bows and pushed ahead. Having settled into a prime spot, it soon became apparent that there would be no way remain unharmed in the bonkers dance party that was occurring in all directions around us. Even after moving, it was still hella rough to keep a steady frame, but we ended up going wide on a lot of the shots to give you a sense of the madness that broke loose during some of Matt and Kim's more animated tracks.
Check out our short film taken mostly from Matt and Kim's set, which includes several tracks including such crowd favorites as "Lessons Learned" and "Yea Yeah." Also mad props to our boy Jeff, who not only recorded sound during the whole set, but also put on his best Charlie Rose impression during our sound check/chat with the two cats from Florida seen in the vid.
