Fresh off the 8 hour dance party madness at Hard NYC (see prior post), the BAL gang thugged it out after work on Monday to bring you more balls tripping performances of a different variety. Backed by a thunderous rhythm section, The Flaming Lips’ Embryonic was one of our favorite albums of last year, a truly gutsy move by the Lips to cement themselves as one of the most forward thinking and most mature sounding acts around. Without hesitation, we jumped on the chance to check them out at yesterday’s Summerstage show, on a gorgeous evening in Central Park.
The Lips are well known for their stage antics, and they sure came through with some great photo and video moments, as shown by the snaps and vids we grabbed. This is Wayne Coyne, yelling some shit while sitting on a bear, for example:
Armed with a seemingly endless supply of confetti, copious smoke machines, and 420 friendly video art, The Lips put on a face melting, ear-drum busting melange of sonic and visual hyperbole, an experience so coordinated and airtight that the park, the city - and the rest of the world it seems, appeared to fade away into insignificance.
The set opened with the all-too-familiar sight of Wayne Coyne climbing into a giant clear bubble and bouncing around in the crowd like a glob of oil in water, all while the rest of the band expelled a range of noises and sounds from "The Fear", before finally crashing into the heavy hitting “Worm Mountain,” one of the loudest and most visceral of the tracks on Embryonic. Awesome, continuous footage of said antics and sounds are documented in the video below. Enjoy that shit!
Mad props to our girls Mary and Bridget who turned up early to secure a spot on the onstage dancing ensemble, and to our friend Melissa over at Bleary Eyed Brooklyn, who assisted with this production (peep her site and check out her great quality vids). If you like our videos, do yourself a favor and follow us on twitter, where all the action happens, apparently. Get on that, son.
